Hotels

Washington Square Park, the home of New York University (where CAST 2014 is held) is easily accessible from many locations.  Public transportation within the New York City is relatively inexpensive, convenient and efficient.

Where to stay and how to get around:

Even for veteran urban dwellers who frequent the various modes of transportation around New York City, the change in routine and free-flowing schedules of a CAST conference can make it a challenge to get around, get where you need to go and keep from getting seriously lost.  While we believe the neighborhoods near and around the conference event location to be quite safe, it will help us to feel better if all attendees have a solid grasp of how to get around the city with confidence and ease.
But hey – if you’d like to not hassle with subways or trains for all that stuff, you could just stay at a hotel within walking distance of the event!?  Great idea, right?  Here’s a listing of hotels in walking distance of the conference:
  • The Marlton Hotel, 5 W 8th Street (1 block)
  • The Washington Square Hotel, 103 Waverly Pl (1 block)
  • The Mercer, 147 Mercer Street (3 blocks)
  • Larchmont Hotel, 27 W 11th Street (4 blocks)
  • The Jade Hotel Greenwich Village NYC, 52 W 13th Street (5 blocks)
  • Hampton Inn Manhattan-SoHo, 54 Watts St (5 long blocks)
  • SIXTY SoHo, 60 Thompson St (5 blocks)
  • Courtyard New York Manhattan/SoHo, 181 Varick St (6 blocks)
  • Bowery’s Whitehouse Hotel of New York (more like a hostel), 340 Bowery (6 blocks)
  • Four Points by Sheraton Manhattan SoHo Village, 66 Charlton St (6 blocks)
  • Hyatt Union Square New York, 134 4th Ave (7 blocks)
Of course should you consider hotels or sight seeing, you should consider the subway as the easiest and most ubiquitous way to transport yourself all about the island of Manhattan (a.k.a. New York, or New York City).  You might just find a great deal on a hotel accommodation, but need a convenient way to get to the conference for 3 days.  It would also be really great to ensure that you can get to and from your hotels with ease, especially because we’ll all be mentally exhausted each day from sessions and perhaps unable to find our way home a comfortable bed.  Be aware, there are a few primary stops for different subway lines that you should be familiar with for the purposes of getting to and from NYU campus where the conference is being held:
  • The West 4th Street stop on the West side of campus which includes the convergence of the Orange (B,D,F & M) and the Blue (A, C & E) subway lines.  It’s about 2 blocks from this subway stop to walk on to the NYU campus.
  • A little further to the West you’ll find the Christopher St – Sheridan Square stop serving the Red (#1) subway line.  Don’t be confused between this MTA subway station and the similarly named PATH train station 5 blocks away to the West.
  • To the North and East of campus is the 8th Street stop on the Yellow (N & R) subway line. and just another block away is the Astor Place stop on the Green (#6) subway line.
  • South and East from campus is the Broadway-Lafayette stops for the Orange (B, D, F & M) subway line.
  • Also to the South and East from campus is the Bleeker Street stop on the Green (#6) subway line.
What we have below are a listing of various hotels and hostels that are located along each of the different MTA subway line and actually even more convenient to a particular stop on that subway line.  This listing will help you to make a decision about where you might stay in Manhattan, where it is very close to the subway stops on the same train lines that have close access to the NYU campus.
